MADRID | BERLIN | ROTTERDAM

introduction

The organization of this meeting is proposed in order to discuss the international financial crisis and prevailing monetary exchange systems among artists who deal with the issue of the economy in their work through the tactical use of the media, the appropriation of corporate strategies or irony.  Banks, technology companies and even micro-nations are just a few examples of the corporations (some fictitious, and others not), created by the artists invited.
The main objective of the meeting will be to elaborate a document as a declaration regarding the current state of the crisis that will include the positions adopted by these “corporations” in the face of the crisis, along with a series of proposals and alternative actions agreed upon by their representatives.  This declaration, along with the proposals set forth by each “corporation” will be compiled in a publication.

The meetings will be held between February 25 and March 10, 2010, successively in three cities: Madrid, Berlin and Rotterdam.  In each city, three activities will be carried out:

Activity 1: Round table and panel discussions

This will consist of a round table and panel discussions to present each “corporation’s” projects.  They will be moderated by Gustavo Romano, Director of the Time Notes bank and the promoter of this encounter, including participation by Georg Zoche, founder of the Transnational Republic, Fran Ilich, Director of SpaceBank and Daniel García Andújar, Director of Technologies to the People.  These artists will be present during the meetings held in each one of the three cities.  They will be joined by local artists who will participate only in the meetings held in their respective cities.

Activity 2: Open Meeting

This will be a meeting focused on exchange with the participation of the above-mentioned guests, open to local individuals and groups who are interested in exchanging ideas and proposals related to the event’s theme.

Activity 3: Internal Debate

This activity will consist of debates among the summit’s participants, during which they will work on reaching an agreement on a final declaration.  The text that emerges as a result will be presented at the last stop of the tour, which will be in Rotterdam.

The declarations that emerge from the meetings will be compiled in a publication, along with each “corporation’s” proposals and additional material generated during the course of these encounters.  Said publication will be published in the following languages: English, German, Dutch and Spanish.
A website developed especially for the event will include the material generated along with the calendar of activities in each city, contact and subscription information and a newsletter.
An informative pamphlet will include the entire tour’s agenda of activities, the list of participants and the underlying ideas behind the project.  Different versions will be printed in each of the languages mentioned.

Carrying out an exhibition is not a strict requisite of the project, but is proposed here in case the host institution in Rotterdam (or, in any case, in Berlin) may consider it to be convenient or of interest to include in their programming.

The space will be set up in the manner of an office with an institutional stand offering information about the summit meeting, the participating artists’ projects and data on the financial crisis.  Alternative proposals will also be received by way of a form to be completed by the public.
Exhibition material in diverse formats corresponding to each artist and every project is available that can be adapted to the particular conditions of the exhibition space.  These formats include publicity posters and corporative promotion material, charts, photographs, videos and online sources of information.
